Loren Wallace Hollingsworth (Wally) 81, of Phoenix, Ariz. died at his home on April 10, 2006, from complications of diabetes.

He was born on June 17, 1924, in Pleasantville to Robert and Sarah (Hodds) Hollingsworth. He graduated from Pleasantville High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Pleasantville and worked as a psyhchiatric assistant and in the supply service at the VA Hospital in Knoxville until his retirement in 1979. He was recognized on numerous occasions for his care and compassion for his patients.

Wally was a gentle, kind and generous man; he was devoted to his grandchildren and was proud to be a lifetime member of the American Legion. He bowled for the American Legion and Cunningham Motors teams in Knoxville for many years, coached little league, enjoyed high school activities and pitched horseshoes. Wally also enjoyed the Phoenix Suns Basketball, Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Wally moved to Phoenix in 1992 after being a part-time Arizona resident in the years following retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Niles and Dean (Barney) Hollingsworth.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances (Mert) Hollingsworth of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Carol Wares of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Richard (Ronda) Hollingsworth of Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Mary O'Neal of Boone; a brother, Frank (Kathy) Hollingsworth of Pleasantville and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held on May 26 at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at 10 a.m. on May 27 at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville or to the American Legion Post 168 in Knoxville for the Avenue of Flags fund.
