Roger John Griffin was born on March 6, 1921, in Santa Barbara, Calif. to Joseph John and Olive Bilbrey Griffin.

He was raised in California and graduated from high school there. He served in the United States Army during WWII. Roger was honorably discharged in February 1944. Following his discharge he worked for the United States Postal Service until retiring. He worked for the Airfield Mail Service, Railway Mail Service and eventually the regular U.S. Mail Service.

On April 29, 1946, he married Fannie Jane Brents in Glendale, Calif. The couple lived in California four years before moving to Kansas. They eventually moved back to California before settling in Pleasantville in 1950. They retired to Arkansas in 1973, and returned to Pleasantville in 1991.

He was a member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, V.F.W., the American Legion, the Military Order of the Cootie and was a 32nd degree Shriner. Roger was very proud of the fact that he won many tournaments in badminton; he also enjoyed bowling and horse racing.

Roger died on Feb. 6, 2006, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown at the age of 84.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fannie; step-son, Alfred; son-in-law, Bob Armstrong and a grandson.

Survivors include his step-daughter, Dorothy Armstrong of Pleasantville, five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 9 with Rev. Jeff Flagg officiating.

A Masonic Service was conducted by the Pleasant Lodge No. 128 A.F. & A.M.

Interment was in Pleasantville Cemetery. Military Honors were accorded by the United States Army and the Pleasantville American Legion Post No. 128.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasantville American Legion or the Pleasantville Masonic Lodge.
