In Response To: Old Eddyville Cemetery (Mary)

The town of Eddyville is actually in both Mahaska and Wapello counties. I also seem to recall there is a wee slice that is in Monroe Co. also.

Why Eddyville Cem/Highland is known by two names has probably been lost in the dusts of time. It is much the same way in Kirkville where the cemetery is known as Kirkville Cem and as Westview Cem. As I recall even the Highland Cemetery in New Sharon has two names, it is both Highland and Masonic. The Keo-Mah genealogy society might actually be able to give some background on the names if you contact them.

My guess is common usage because the above examples are not the only cases of multiple names. Floris and Bloomfield both have cemeteries known by two names.

The cemetery across the road, which to me is all one, is actually St Mary's or something like that.
