Charles E. Hargrave, was born in Harrison county, Ohio, October 27, 1833, and departed this life at New Sharon, Iowa, the 13th day of April, 1908, being 74 four years, 5 months and 16 days old.

He was united in marriage with Mary A. Cadwallader November 23, 1864, and since that time he has been a resident of Mahaska county. To this union were born nine children – five sons and four daughters, seven of whom survive him, and all were present when he passed away. One daughter died in infancy and one married son preceded him two years ago.

When a young man, he was graduated from Eastman’s Business College of Poughkeepsie, New York, but he chose the life of a farmer, which he followed until his retirement to New Sharon, November 16, 1905. He was a life-long member of the Society of Friends, having united with them early in life. He was very conscientious in his religious life, and always endeavored to live a true life, not only in the presence of his family and fellowmen, but, also in the presence of God, and his parting testimony was that of willingness and readiness to step out into the great future, there to receive the word of his life.

He leaves a faithful and loving wife, four sons and three daughters, two brothers and two sisters, besides a host of friends who mourn his loss. The cause of his death was cancer of the stomach, which caused a hemorrhage on March 28th, followed by three others, the last of which proved fatal.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. W. Hammond and Rev. S. P. Miller on April 15th, from the Friends’ church. The funenral was largely attended and included practically all his friends from his old home neighborhood and his many new ones here.

Lydia Hussey, of Columbus, Ohio, and John Hargrave, of Harrisonville, Ohio, his siter and brother, were present at the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in the Friends’ cemetery at New Sharon, Iowa.

Source unknown newspaper clipping came with photo album purchase.
