Russell L. Stout Sr., 81, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, April 14, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Stephen Lane officiating. Burial: Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, with graveside military rites by members of Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Visiting hours begin 4 p.m. today at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with family present 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials: Mahaska Hospice of Lutheran Missions.
Russell L. Stout Sr. was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Lacey to Frank W. and Maude Russell Stout. He graduated from Lacey High School, then attended business school in Chillicothe, Mo. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and saw action at the Battle of the Bulge. On Jan. 15, 1949, he married Shirley R. Stout in Oskaloosa. Early in life he farmed and later managed the state-owned liquor store in Oskaloosa for nearly 25 years. He retired at age 65. He then worked for Pinkerton Security Co. for six years, in security at Clow Corp. in Oskaloosa. He was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, and Harry L. Anderson Post No. 34, American Legion, of which he had served as commander.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley R. Stout of Oskaloosa; two sons and daughters-in-law: Russell Stout Jr. and Mary Stout of Oskaloosa, and Jay and Sharon Stout of Ivoryton, Conn.; three daughters and a son-in-law: Cheryl and Bucky Ward of Louisiana, Mo., Roxanne Stout and Rochelle Bethune, both of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Jeremy, Cary and Brittany Bethune, and Jenny, Ryan and Caleb Stout; a brother and sister-in-law: Darrell and Bonnie Stout of New Sharon; and two sisters and a brother-in-law: Esther Woodward of Oskaloosa and Beryl and Harold Williams of New Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Alberta Ellen Stout.
