Dorothy E. "Veerman" McCombs, age 76, of Oskaloosa died Friday evening, October 27, 2000 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Dorothy was born on July 29, 1924 in Mahaska County to Herman & Elizabeth Van Rees Veerman. Early in life she lived on farms with her parents, brothers and sisters and attended rural schools. Dorothy graduated from Oskaloosa High School in May of 1942. During high school and after graduation, she worked for F.W. Woolworth Store. On December 6, 1942 she married James D. McCombs at Kirksville, Missouri. They spent time together at Fort Hood, Texas and Camp Livingston, Louisiana during Jim's enlistment with the U.S. Army. Dorothy and Jim enjoyed raising their four sons. In 1953 she returned to work at Ideal Manufacturing and for Oskaloosa Food Service. She retired in 1994. Dorothy was a member of Central Reformed Church.
She is survived by her husband James "Jim" McCombs of Oskaloosa, four sons and their wives - Jimmy & Elizabeth McCombs of Post Falls, Idaho, Duane & Patricia McCombs of Kansas City, Missouri, Craig & Cristy McCombs of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Roger & Mindy McCombs of Pella, Iowa. Also five grandchildren - Alexander Scott in Pella, Katherine Ann "Kate" in Columbia, Missouri, Casey Catherine in Ankeny, Iowa, Ryan James Henry in Pella, and Megan Jo-Dorothy McCombs in Pella. Four sisters - Henrietta & Neal Newenhouse, Artie Van Roekel, and Helen Carriker - all of Oskaloosa, and Nellie & Rex Talbert of Greentop, Missouri. Also one brother - Floyd W. (Bill) & Martha Veerman of Oskaloosa.
She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers - Ernest, Roy, Herman and John Veerman.
Services were held on Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Donald DeGlopper officiating. Interment in Forest Cemetery.
