Clark Johnston, 77 of Oskaloosa, died Friday, Feb. 16, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. The body has been cremated, and a private family graveside services will be held at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville, with Military Honors by the Eddyville American Legion. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa is in charge of the arrangements.
Clark Johnston was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Kirkville to Fred and Gladys Faye Shaw Johnston. He graduated from Eddyville High School in 1942, then attended William Penn College and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of arts in education. He earned his master's degree from Northeast Missouri State University in 1968. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 8, 1943 to Nov. 1, 1945. He married Helen Norwood on Aug. 2, 1946, in Oskaloosa. He taught school in Oskaloosa from 1954 to 1987 at Jefferson Elementary and Oskaloosa Junior High, and was also principal at Garfield Elementary School. He was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and was involved in coaching and officiating for many years. He was instrumental in the design of the World War II Memorial at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Johnston of Oskaloosa; two sons: Roger Clark Johnston of Marengo and William Kelly and his wife Cindy of Lee's Summit, Mo.; two daughters and their husbands: Diane and Dean Sires of Oskaloosa and Becky and Monte Moore of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine McGinity; and six brothers: Thomas, Federick, George, Stanley, Fay and Lewis. (The Oskaloosa Herald, unknown date)
