Rose Hill - George DeGroot, 87, of Rose Hill, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1986 at Mahaska Manor. He was born May 2, 1899 in South Holland, Ill., the son of Richard and Jennie DeJong DeGroot.
He married Bertha Hollander on Dec. 16, 1924 in Oskaloosa. She died on Feb. 21, 1979.
He is survived by four sons: John, Kenneth and Lee, all of Rose Hill and Howard of Oskaloosa; two duaghters: Mrs. Josephine Hardeman of Rose Hill and Mrs. Beulah DeGraaf of Prairie City; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Martina DeGroot of Pella; 29 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Harry of Oskaloosa and Tony of Ottumwa; and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Schooland of Alamosa, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha; three sons, a sister, a granddaugther, and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, with a 1:15 family prayer service with Rev. Peter VandeWeide and Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Christian Grade School. (The Oskaloosa Herald, date unknown)
