Mildred L. DeJong, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Dec. 24, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Ron Haas officiating. Interment: Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation is open at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with family present Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established in her name.
Mrs. DeJong was born June 24, 1915, in Mahaska County to Thomas R. and Hazel Reynolds Jones. She was a 1933 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. On June 29, 1946, she married Albert DeJong in Bemidji, Minn. He died Nov. 22, 1986. She served for several years as Dr. Catterson’s nurse in Oskaloosa and also owned and operated Dee’s Floral and Craft from 1972 to 1984. She continued operating her business from home until her death. She was a baptized member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa and served as a past president and treasurer of the local business and Professional Women’s organization. She had also served as state treasurer for BPW.
Survivors include one son and wife: Howard and Jan Sears of Des Moines; one daughter, Betty Grandia Flom, and her husband Jim of Faribault, Minn.; a stepson and his wife: Gary and Mildred De Jong of Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepdaughters: Willamina (Mrs. Ralph) Lockard of Oskaloosa and Inez L. Kirk of Springfield, Mo.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; two brothers and their wives: Robert and Violet Jones and Tom and Barbara Jones, all of Oskaloosa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Albert and two sisters: Myrtle Martin and Elsie Jones. (The Oskaloosa Herald, p. 2, 1995).
