A.J. Jewell is Dead - Prominent Resident of Mahaska County Passes Away.
Hon. A.J. Jewell, one of the oldest and best known of Mahaska county pioneer farmers, passed away peacefully and quietly at his home in Spring Creek township, at 10:15 o’clock Thursday evening, May 14, 1908, after a lingering illness and confinement with jaundice. The funeral will be held from the late residence Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., and interment will be in the old cemetery.
Andrew Jackson Jewell, “Jack, he was called by his friends, was a native in Ohio, born Feb. 14, [illegible], was 78 years and 3 months of age at the date of death. He has been fifty-three in Iowa and Mahaska county. Mr. Jewell was an old soldier and belonged to the regiment that became famous in history as “The Squirrel Hunters.” He also represented Mahaska county in the legislature during one term. The deceased leaves a widow and two sons, C.W. Jewell, of Utica, Ohio, who was recently here on a visit, and Pliny Jewell, of this county. Two brothers also survive, Jacob, at Pueblo, Colo., and Johnathan, of Leonardsburg, Ohio. Mr. Jewell knew that the end was near, but he was not in the least disturbed by the knowledge. He was self-possessed and even cheerful. He gave directions concerning his personal affairs and the arrangements for his funeral. He requested that the following act as pall-bearers: Pliny A. Jewell, Matt Crozier, William Campbell, Joseph Beach, William Rice and I.N.Taylor. Death came without struggle and without pain. The man was conscious to the last and as easily as a child falling to sleep the old pioneer passed on to his last long rest. (The Oskaloosa Daily Herald, May 15, 1908, p. 8)

Having returned to Ohio for a short time in 1860 he resided in the vicinity of Cincinnati for two or three years during which time he was a member Squirrel Hunters Military Co., organized for the protection particularly of Cincinnati. Returning to Mahaska county, he again took up farming in Spring Creek township, being associated with his son P.J. Jewell. Charles Jewell, a son by his first wife, now resides in Utica, Ohio. Jacob Jewell of Pueblo, Colorado and Jonathan Jewell, who resides in Ohio are brothers of the deceased. The Globe enjoyed for a quarter of a century an especially interesting and pleasant acquaintance with the late Mr. Jewell. He was a frequent caller at this office, contributed now and then articles of travel that were read with interest and as we now recall there has not a year passed in a decade without Mr. Jewell mailing a number of copies of the Globe’s annual Christmas Number to his relatives and friends residing at a distance.
