Ruth J. Walker (1921-2009)

Ruth J. Walker, the daughter of Charles and Nora Belle Alexander Warrick, was born July 5, 1921, in Mahaska County near Tioga. On August 7, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Walker, and Raymond died July 20, 2000. Together they farmed; first northeast of Oskaloosa for a few years, and then in 1943, they moved to a farm southeast of Rose Hill. Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa; and since 1977, she and Raymond sponsored several Thai Dam families in the area. Ruth enjoyed gardening, and was a loving, dedicated mother, and cared for her daughter, Rhonda, in their home until recent years.

On Wednesday, February 25, 2009, Ruth died at the at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney at the age of 87 years, 7 months, and 20 days.

Her family includes a son: Leland Walker of Cedar Rapids; and two daughters and a son in law: Charlotte and Leland Hintz of Des Moines, and Rhonda Walker of Indianola. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Craig Hintz, Tina (Scott) Cronbaugh, and Emily (Jestin) Haugh; and a great grandson: Brody Walker Allen Haugh.

Besides her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in law, Joan Walker; a granddaughter: Laura Walker; a brother: Earl Warrick; and two sisters: Bernice Warrick and Lois Bolyard.

Funeral services for Ruth Walker were held Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Cemetery near Rose Hill. Visitation began at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Friday after 12 noon, and the family was at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time to greet friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorials may be made to the Christian Opportunity Center. (from Ruth's funeral card).
