Mary H. Duffus, the daughter of Fredrick and Wilhelmina Bieshaar Denburger, was born Saturday, January 6, 1912 in Leighton, Iowa. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1929. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the Mahaska Hospital School of Nursing in Oskaloosa with the class of 1934. Upon earning her Registered Nurse pin, Mary worked as a nurse for a time. On September 12, 1935, she was united in marriage to Robert S. Duffus in Leighton; he died March 2, 1972. Following their marriage, Mary was a homemaker and stayed home to care for her family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, and P.E.O. Chapter X of Oskaloosa. She enjoyed golfing, and playing bridge.

On Friday, May 15, 2009, Mary died at the Franklin General Hospital nursing facility in Hampton, Iowa, at the age of 97 years, 4 months, and 9 days.

Her family includes her two sons: James (& Barbara) Duffus, and John "Jack" Duffus all of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Harry Denburger; and four sisters: Ruth Easton, Ada Larson, Martha Lowman and Freda Lytle.

Funeral services for Mary Duffus will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dr. Dennis Morey officiating. Private family burial will be in the Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m. and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Tuesday from 5 - 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library. (from Mary Duffus' funeral card)
