Katy Kirby (1926 -2005)

Kathryn "Katy" Kirby, 78, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of Rose Hill, died Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Hospice Comfort House in Pella. She was born on October 23, 1926, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Warren and Margaret Davis Steen. She graduated from the New Sharon High School with the class of 1944. She then attended beauty school in Des Moines and was a beauty operator in Pella prior to her marriage. On June 2, 1946, Katy was united in marriage to George I. "Skip" Kirby at Greenville, South Carolina, and he died August 18, 1999. They lived at Rose Hill for many years, and Katy was a cook for the Rose Hill school, and later for the Oskaloosa schools, for a total of 23 years. She was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church; Phi Chi Club; Pythian Sisters of Iowa; and the Rose Hill Ruritan Club. They moved from Rose Hill to Oskaloosa in 1998, and she volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center and singing with small groups as they entertained local nursing home residents. She enjoyed socializing with friends.

On Saturday, February 12, 2005, Katy died at Hospice Comfort Hosue in Pella, at the age of 78 years, 3months, and 20 days.

Katy is survived by her daughter and son in law: Kathy and Bill Hicklin of Solon; and a sister: Bette Keller of Long Island, New York.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services for Katy Kirby will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Del Bittner officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Monday after 9 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6:30 ? 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Rose Hill Community Church, the Rose Hill Ruritan Club, or to the Hospice Comfort House. (from Katy's funeral card)
