Marcella E. Dykstra (1926-2003)

Marcella, daughter of Perry & Goldie Smith Chilcote, was born Feb. 1, 1926, in Mahaska County. She was a graduate of Riverside Country School in Mahaska County. On August 24, 1944, she married J. Gene Dykstra in Oskaloosa; they lived in rural Mahaska County until 1958 when they moved to Oskaloosa. After the death of their son, Daryl, Marcella & Gene raised their two granddaughters, Amy & Erin Dykstra. Marcella was a homemaker until her children were raised, when she worked at several businesses, including Graham's Department Store, Mahaska Manor and lastly, at Wal-Mart, in the snack bar, and as a greeter.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the American Legion. Marcella enjoyed her Canasta card club, her bowling team, Saturday evening dances with Gene, family functions, her grandchildren, gardening, sewing, baking, and cooking.

Marcella Eldora Dykstra passed away Friday evening, Nov. 7, 2003, at Ottumwa Regional Hospital at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 6 days.

Marcella's memory is honored by her three sons and their wives: Wayne & Velma Dykstra of Columbia, MO; Keith & Babs Dykstra of Charles City, IA and Roger & Barb Dykstra of Oskaloosa. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters & their husbands: Louise & Bob Hicklin of Oskaloosa, and Phyllis & Marvin Loynachan of Pershing, IA, and two brothers and their wives: Louis & Genevieve Chilcote and Willis & Mary Chilcote, all of Oskaloosa.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Gene on September 1, 2001, and a son, John Daryl Dykstra on June 15, 1973, and a granddaughter in infancy, Nanette Dykstra.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, November 11, 2003, at two o'clock in the afternoon at Garland-VanArkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Interment in the Garden of Benediction, Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Iowa.
