Irene L. Cleland, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, Oct. 7, at Mahaska Hospital. Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Michael Crouch of First Christian Church officiating. Cremation will follow the service; private burial will be at Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart, Poweshiek County, at a later date. Visiting hours at the funeral home begin 1 p.m. today and continue Thursday, with family present 6 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials: First Christian Church Building Fund or the American Heart Association.
Irene Louise Cleland was born Sept. 12, 1910, in Grinnell to Charles and Eda Wilhelmina Fredricks Hink. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1928, then attended the University of Iowa for two years. She married William Raymond Cleland in Crown Point, Ind., on March 12, 1931. They farmed near Ewart until her husband's death on Jan. 5, 1968. Irene was a bookkeeper for Sig Manufacturing in Montezuma. In 1969, she moved to Leisure City, Fla., with her daughter; there she was a bookkeeper at Kendall Foods. In 1994 she moved to Osakloosa Retirement Center in Oskaloosa. She loved spending time with friends, playing cards and bingo, and working on ceramics. She moved to Georgian Court Nursing Home in June 2002. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ewart; the Eastern Star in Homestead, Fla.; and the Countryside Stars Women's Club in Ewart. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: BIll and Patty Cleland of Oskaloosa; two granddaughters and husbands: Julie and Charlie Herbst of Gurner, Ill., and Jennifer and Craig McClenahan of Keota; and five great-grandchildren: Tiffany and Tanner McClenahan, and Andy, Morgana nd Paige Herbst. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; a duaghter, Margaret; two sisters: Dorothy Holtz and Helen Bostell; and a brother, Carl Hink. (The Oskaloosa Herald, n.d.)
