Walter D. Van Zomeren (1915-2006)

Walter D. Van Zomeren, 90, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of Pella, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born April 16, 1915 near Monroe, the son of Tunis Dirk and Anna Roorda Van Zomeren. He attended Pella Christian Grade School for five years, and then Bunker Hill country school near Pella for three years. On August 15, 1934, he was united in marriage to Josephine Van Haaften at Newton, and she died March 3, 1989. Walt farmed for many years in several places, mostly near Fremont, until retiring from farming in 1966. He then worked as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance in Oskaloosa for 20 years, retiring in 1986. On November 4, 1989, he was married to Harriet Arlene Roorda at Oskaloosa, and she died January 31, 2006. They lived in Oskaloosa until moving to Pella in the mid 1990's, and Walt moved back to Oskaloosa three weeks ago. Walt was a member of First Reformed Church of Pella; and a former member of the Oskaloosa Rotary Club and charter member of the Fremont Lions.

His family includes a son and his wife: Jerry D. and Shirley Van Zomeren of Oskaloosa; two daughters and their husbands: Joanne and Gerald Roquet of Hedrick and Marylinn J. and James Rice of Ottawa, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; a stepson and his wife, Gordon and JoAnn Roorda of Urbandale and a step daughter and her husband: Janet and Roger Nordos of Bloomington, Minnesota; and 3 brothers: Carl Van Zomeren and Gerrit Van Zomeren, both of Oskaloosa, and Clarence (& Dorothy) Van Zomeren of San Pablo, California.

Besides both wives, Walt was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Nancy Nadine Verros; two sisters: Leona Van Zomeren and another in infancy; and two sisters in law: Elizabeth Van Zomeren and Mary Van Zomeren.

Funeral services for Walt Van Zomeren will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Ray Tilstra officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6 - 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
