Ivan's family includes his wife of 56 years, Janet Hankins of Eddyville; a son, Ivan Dale (LaDawn) Hankins, III of Waterloo; a daughter, Shari (Robert) Hankins-Barnhart of University Park; granddaughters: Danielle and Amanda French of Cedar Falls and Mandy Barnhart of Bedford, Iowa; grandsons: Boston and Bailey Barnhart of University Park and Holden Barnhart of Wahiawa, Hawaii; four step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Ivan Dale Hankins, II, son of Ivan Dale and Josephine Van Stelten Hankins, was born November 19, 1930 in Mankato, Minnesota. He lived in numerous towns in Minnesota, at the age of eight his father's death prompted the family to move to Edgerton, Minn. He was a 1948 graduate of Edgerton High School and then attended South Dakota State University where he played football. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and served as a navigator/bombardier; he flew in 27 combat missions in Korea in a B-29 bomber and later flew B-47s for the Strategic Air Command. He was discharged in 1959 having attained the rank of Major. Ivan married Janet Elaine Hynick, April 9, 1954, while stationed in Houston, Texas. Following his discharge they moved to the Oskaloosa area where he began farming with his brother-in-law. Ivan continued to pursue his degree in education at William Penn College and graduated in 1969. While at Penn Ivan served as a volunteer football coach. Ivan's first teaching assignment was from 1969 through 1974 with Twin Cedars, he served at Moravia from 1974 to 1978 and at Oskaloosa High School from 1978 to his retirement in 1995. Throughout Ivan's teaching career he coached football, baseball, girl's basketball, girl's track and softball. He continued as a coach with the Oskaloosa High School 9th grade football program until 2008. His 9th grade coaching record with Phil James was 150 wins ? 49 losses with 3 ties. Ivan was passionate about his students and athletics, regardless of their abilities. He inspired many with his belief that anything can be accomplished with a little hard work and a positive attitude.

Ivan was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, American Legion Post #34, VFW Post #2237 and was a post member of the Elks. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, crossword puzzles, writing poetry and spending time with his family.

Besides his parents, Ivan was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Schelhaas and many other aunts, uncles and other relatives. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa, May 2010.
