14 Year Old
Girl Killed
By Tractor

The daughter of a Rose Hill man, Artis Joyce Yeoman, 14, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Ottumwa hospital after being struck by a tractor about 2 p.m. Thursday.

She is the daughter of Charles Yeoman, who lives north of Rose Hill, and Mrs. Everett L. O'Laughlin, who lives on a farm west of Ottumwa.

Both parents are formerly of Fremont. They were seperated and Mrs. O'Laughlin remarried. Artis was living on her mother's farm where the accident happened.

Backs Down Hill

Authorities said that Artis and her sister, Gloria, 19, were riding the family tractor uphill when the motor suddenly died. The machine started zig-zagging backwards down the hill.

Both girls were thrown off and the tractor apparently struck Artis. A skull fracture caused her death, hospital attendents said. Gloria was thrown clear, but she suffered a fractured right hip and a right shoulder injury.

Gloria is reported in "fairly good" condition at Ottumwa hospital today.

Other survivors include two brothers, Richard of Ottumwa and Charles of Ottumwa route 4, and a grandfather, J.D. Yeoman of Fremont.
