Former sheriff Mateer dies at Iowa City.
[picture]Dwight H. Mateer, 73, former sheriff of Mahaska County for 14 years, died at the University Hospitals in Iowa City late Thursday following a lingering illness.
Born July 13, 1899 in Rose Hill, he was the son of Charles E. and Frankie Dickson Mateer.
He is survived his wife Inez, a daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Lucille) Lorence, a son Harold and son-in-law Vernon Lorence all of Oskaloosa. He is also survived by granddaughter and four grandsons.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Garland Chapel with The Rev. Clinton Meininger officiating and burial in Forest Cemetery.
Mateer was an auctioneer for years in the Oskaloosa area, former President of the Southern Iowa Fair Board, member of the Eagles, and was highly interested in harness racing.
He served as a starter for horse races on fair circuits, and in recent years worked with the horses as a trainer.
