Obituary
John D. Bushong, son of John and Rachel Bushong, was born February 10, 1838, near East Liberty, Logan county, Ohio, and departed this life at the home of his son, Hugh, near Barnes City, Iowa, August 29, 1912. He moved with his parents to Poweshiek county in the fall of 1856 and was married to Mary E. Lawton at Oskaloosa, Iowa, in June 1864. To this union were born six sons and three daughters. The mother, three sons and two daughters preceded him in death. Three sons and one daughter survive, A. B. Bushong, of Oskaloosa, J. M. Bushong, of Montezuma, Lina Rakestraw of Horton, MO., and Hugh L., of Barnes City. The children were all present except Lina, who was unable to attend. He leaves also two brothers and one sister of Cloud county, Kansas, eleven grandchildren and host of friends.
While he never made a profession of christianity he live an upright life, dealing honestly with everybody. He has lived most of his life in Jasper and Poweshiek counties. Four years were spent in Decatur county and one and a half years in Vernon county, Missouri, from which place he returned last spring. His health began to fail rapidly after his return and he was taken from the home of his son Bert, in Oskaloosa, to the home of his son Hugh, where he died. The children feel the loss keenly, but hope it is eternal gain. His two brothers from Kansas were present at the funeral, which was held at Forest Home and was conducted by William Robertson. The body was laid to rest in the Forest Home cemetery beside that of his wife and one son--Lynnville Star.
