May 2023Hazel Stanley, of Winterset, passed away May 3, 2023, at Azria Health, at the age of 100 years, 11 months, and 12 days.
Funeral services for Hazel will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel, with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for a future designation.
Hazel was born to Roy and Pearl (Byers) Enfield on a farm near Elkhart, Iowa, on May 21, 1922. She received her education beginning at a country school called Pleasant Valley, riding her horse named Twinkle to school. Hazel and her sister, Darlene, attended the Loring Church, and rode Twinkle to Vacation Bible School, where they tied him to the cemetery fence so he could be in the shade.
In September of 1934, the family moved to Earlham. Her mother, Pearl, opened the first beauty shop in Earlham. The shop was there for seventy years, with changes in ownership several times. When Hazel was in seventh grade, her mother married Charles Mleynek, and they moved to the farm and house across south and east of the Worthington Church. In 8th grade she attended the Worthington Country School, and attended high school in Earlham, graduating in May of 1941.
Hazel met Dale Stanley at the Worthington Church, and they were married January 11, 1942. In March of that year, they moved to their 40-acre farm on Hogback Bridge Road. The house had no water, the windmill had fallen, and the well had caved in. They started their married life with 2 dozen laying hens, 4 sows, and 1 cow. Dale carried a 5-gallon bucket of water home each day from his folks’ place. After the crops were planted, they dug a new well, and set the windmill back up again.
On March 7, 1943, their first son, Dean, was born at her mother’s home, and on October 4, 1946, their second son, Don was born. Dale and Hazel farmed until his retirement in 2007.
Hazel was an avid sports fan, traveling to many games of their sons and grandchildren. She even traveled to Tokyo to watch her grandson in a football game.
She loved quilting, her plants, and the Worthington Church. She also loved to travel, going on many bank bus trips, and she went on a cruise to Alaska.
Hazel is survived by son, Dean, and wife Earline, of Earlham, son, Don, and wife Kay, of Winterset; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents, Roy and Pearl; her stepfather, Charles; her sister, Darlene; and brother, LeRoy.
