Daniel Kosman

Daniel Kosman 57, was born to Cecilia Ann and David Francis Kosman at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on January 8, 1962. His siblings include: sisters, Regina and Denise and brothers, Paul, Kevin, and Ben.

Dan was baptized at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines Iowa, on January 21, 1962 His godparents are John and Doris Craig and Bernadine and Gene Comer.

The early part of Dan’s life was spent on the family farm near Weldon Iowa, where he shared many special memories doing lots of farm work for various farmers; working cattle, building fence, and getting out some young man’s orneriness daily with his brother Paul.

In the early 1980s, Dan settled in Indianola, Iowa where he made his home. He began working at Meadow Gold Dairy in Des Moines soon after coming to Indianola. He traveled all over Iowa, Illinois and Indiana hauling ice cream and novelty frozen items and soon became known to his friends as “Dan, Dan, the ice cream man.” He remained at Meadow Gold for the next 11 years until the dairy closed for business. The next Monday he began work at AE Dairy, where he spent the next 20 years until his retirement in March of 2019.

Dan’s work ethic was like no other. In 35 years of employment, he prided himself that he never missed one day of work and was never once late for work. Anyone who knew him knew he valued hard work and responsibility.

In 1999, Dan met his beloved wife Lala, and they were married by Fr. James Kiernan, on their shared birthday at St Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, in 2004. Of this union Dan gained a step daughter Ashley who he loved dearly.

Dan was a man of unshakeable faith. He prayed the Rosary daily and did not miss mass for any reason. Even on vacation in Alaska, he found a mass (Russian orthodox, couldn’t understand a word) but he was there. Due to his faith, he and Fr. Kiernan shared a special bond. Dan was an alter boy for Fr. Kieman at a very young age. Dan attending mass at St Ambrose, often in the days Fr. Kieman was a priest there, especially in the 1980s since Dan worked just blocks away. Fr Kiernan blessed Dan’s home, and lastly married him. Dan will be buried among Fr Kiernan’s family in the Irish Cemetery at St. Patricks Irish Settlement.

Dan treasured his many friendships, as he did not know a stranger. If you needed anything, Dan was your man. He gave of himself daily, often helping the homeless even if offering just a hot coffee, or pair of gloves in winter.

Once while driving to work, Dan witnessed a blind lady fall in a man hole where a sidewalk was being repaired, so he parked his truck in the middle of SE 14th Street (yes, blocking traffic) ran over, pulled her out and escorted her across and up to the Walmart where he paid the manager to buy her new clothes so she could begin her shift. He thought nothing of these good deeds as they were just ”‘what a good person should do.”

Dan was a selfless man. His intention in life was to leave the world a bit better place for having been here. His only wish was to be well remembered……you will be, my love….. Always and Forever-L
