Olive Catherine Kerns, 98, of Coppell, Texas; formerly of the Macksburg area, passed away Wed. November 27, 2019 at the Sandy Lake Rehabilitation and Care Center in Coppell, Texas.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the Jerusalem United Methodist Church, 1965 REA Road, Creston, with Rev. Jim Morris officiating.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery northeast of Creston at Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Olive Catherine Kerns was born January 14, 1921 on a farm south of Creston. She was the daughter of Walter Alvin Kerns and Mary Caroline (Wiesseman) Kerns. She lived in the Creston area until August 2015 when her family moved her to Coppell, Texas.

She attended school for 12 years and graduated from Zion High School 1938.

Olive never married or had children. She was a homemaker and helped her brother, Wayne, manage the farm near Macksburg, Iowa.

Olive was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church where she was an organist, taught Sunday School, and provided flowers from her garden for the worship center every Sunday.

Olive spent a lifetime being a Horticulturist. She was a member of Lincoln Neighbor’s Club, a 50+ year member of the Afton Federated Garden Club, and a Master Flower Show Judge. She served on the Federation’s State Board in several capacities and acted as a mentor for newer judges and garden club members.

Olive enjoyed gardening and flower judging at the county and state fairs. She read and studied constantly from her library, tried new plants each year, hybridized and crossbred iris. Other interests included sewing her own clothes and embroidery. Her favorite birds were the cardinal and peacock.

Olive is survived by nephews Robert (Hiromi) of Corta Madera, California, Tom of Coppell, Texas, Donald (Valarie) of Coppell, Texas and niece Susan of Port Ludlow, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wayne and Clair.
