Death claimed one of the early settlers in this section of Iowa last Sunday, May 10th, when James Andrew Eppard died at his home in St. Charles. Mr. Eppard came to Iowa 58 years ago from Page county, in the Shenendoah valley of Virginia. With his family they came overland to the Ohio river and down it to the Mississippi and up that river to Keokuk where they left the little river steamer and started overland again. They settled on a tract of land on North river, about fifteen miles northwest of Winterset.

After five years Mr. Eppard went back to Virginia, but within a year had returned to North river with a bride and they purchased a small farm. The next year brought the panic of 1873 and they lost the farm, but returned to it as owners after renting for a short time. Twice later more land was added and on this farm they lived until 1902 when they purchased a farm near Earlham. In 1905 they moved to a farm near Linden and in 1919 to one near Wick. In 1914 he quit farming actively and they moved to St. Charles.

James Andrew Eppard was born May 2, 1847, and died May 10th, 1925, at the age of 78 years and 8 days. He was married on May 12, 1872 to Mary Jane Weaver who survives him. Nine children were at Camp Pike, Arkansas, in January 1919. The living children are: Mrs. Laura Brown, Des Moines; Mrs. J. B. Dodson, Joplin, Mo.; Mrs. W. A. Davenport, Macoun, Sask., Canada; Marion Eppard, Spokane, Wash.; Frank Eppard, Winterset: born to this union, all of whom are living except Glenn, who died; Mrs. T. P. Martin, Austin, Texas; Mrs. Chas. Sweet, Topeka, Kansas; and Miss Edith Eppard who is with her mother in St. Charles. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Arminta Weaver of Winterset and two brothers, John who lives at Craik, Sask., Canada and Earl who lives in Virginia.

He has been a member of the Church of Christ for over 49 years having helped organize the Early Chapel Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in St. Charles, Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the St. Charles cemetery.
