Elmer Zimmerman, cashier of the Peru Savings bank, passed away at the Winterset hospital on Wednesday, May 6th, at the age of 58. Mr. Zimmerman’s health failed last year. He went to Des Moines for special treatment and it was hoped that he had secured permanent relief from a diabetic malady. After returning to his desk in the bank, he was taken ill with a complication of pneumonia and spinal meningitis.

Mr. Zimmerman had lived in and near Madison county for many years. He was a capable business man, an exemplary citizen and his death means a real loss to the community around Peru, where he was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.

Elmer Clay Zimmerman, son of Joseph and Barbara Zimmerman, was born in Wayne county, Ohio, March 21, 1867 and died at the hospital in Winterset, May 6, 1925 at the age of 58 years, 1 month, 15 days. He came to Warren county at the age of 14 and grew to manhood at New Virginia.

He was married Feb. 22, 1900 to Mary Gertrude Smith. To this union one son was given, Harry who was born Dec. 27, 1900, and is now a successful traveling salesman. The deceased was for some time in the mercantile business at New Virginia, also spent three years in Van Meter, then came to Peru, where he served as cashier of the Peru Savings bank until the time of his death. Mrs. Zimmerman died Oct. 23, 1922. There are also two brothers and four sisters, who survive him: Jake of Toledo, Ohio; Samuel of New Potsburg, Ohio; Mrs. Michael Thomas, Mrs. George Thomas and Mrs. Kate Bean of New Virginia; and Mrs. D. S. England of Woodland, Mich.

Mr. Zimmerman was converted in childhood and became a member of the church. He was faithful to the interests of the church and ready to respond when called upon for its support. He was noted for his integrity and honest in his business life. He will be greatly missed by his many friends in the community where he has lived.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning and interment took place at Ebeneezer cemetery.
