Seventy-eight years ago, there came to gladden the home of George W. and Sidney C. Sole, a son, Joseph Robert, on Aug. 25, 1846. There in his native state of West Virginia he spent his childhood and received his early training and education. At the age of 24 he moved to Madison county. He attended school in Winterset and afterwards taught school for a short period.

November 30, 1871 he was married to Miss Ruth Cox. They located on a farm near Winterset and there resided until 1903, when he and his two sons moved to Earlham, his wife having preceded him in death, Jan. 10, 1903.

He leaves to mourn his loss two sons, Albert and George of the Earlham vicinity, and three daughters: Mrs. Charles Addy and Mrs. John Brittain of Winterset and Mrs. P. S. Roderick of Earlham; besides 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Two daughters, Elizabeth and Lily May, preceded him in death several years ago.

He was a great believer in the great beyond and when a young man was considered a good, conscientious worker in the M. E. church. Later he united with the Baptist church of Winterset, of which he was a member at the time of his death.

He was a man of quiet demeanor, truthful, upright citizen, honest in his dealings and lived his life as an open book. He had been ailing for a number of years, but had not been serious until the past few months, when he gradually failed and finally answered the call of his Master on the morning of May 1st.

Funeral services were conducted at his home on May 3, by Rev. Eben A. Thomas, pastor of the M.E. church of Earlham, and his remains were interred in the McDonald cemetery.
