DEATH OF CHESTER JONES

Prominent Penn Township Farmer Dies At Age of 63

Chester L. Jones, a resident of Penn township since early youth, died at his home there June 11th. He was 63 years of age.

Mr. Jones has been known over a long period of years as one of the prominent and successful farmers of Madison county. For nearly a half century he has taken a leading part in the affairs, both civic and religious, of Penn township, and has exerted considerable influence throughout the county.

Chester Jones was born December 14th, 1870, in Glenmont, Ohio, the son of Basil and Sarah Watts Jones. At the age of 12 years he came with his parents to Iowa, settling on a farm near Pitzer. At the age of 21 he united with the Early Chapel church, serving as an elder there for a period of 25 years.

On June 20th, 1900, he was married to Cora Neff. The couple moved to the present home in Penn township in 1904. They were the parents of a daughter and a son, Helen and Byron.

In addition to the two children survivors include his wife and six brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church on June 13th. The Rev. Clarence Eppard of Clarinda was in change of the rites. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.

Prominent Penn Township Man is Called By Death Monday Evening. Had Long Been Active in School Circles. Funeral Services Were Held Wednesday Afternoon at Penn Center.

Earlham and the Penn Center community were saddened Monday to learn of the death of Chester L. Jones, well-known Penn Township man, who passed away at his home after an illness of several weeks from a heart ailment. Mr. Jones, had long been connected with the activities of the Penn Center community, serving in many capacities, in the church and school, and had proved himself to be a man of outstanding integrity.

A brief history of the life of Mr. Jones is as follows:

Chester L. Jones, son of Basil and Sarah Watts Jones was born in Glenmont, Ohio, December 14, 1870. At the age of 12 years with his parents he came to Iowa, settling near Pitzer, Iowa. When he was 21 years of age he united with the Early Chapel church, under the ministry of Edgar Price and served as an elder of that church for a period of 25 years. He was married June 20, 1900 to Cora Neff and moved to their present home in Penn Twp. in 1904. To this union were born two children, Helen W. and Byron N. Those who are left to mourn are his wife, daughter and son, six brothers and sisters and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Penn Center church with the Rev. Clarence Eppard, a life-long friend of the deceased, officiating. Interment was in the Penn Center cemetery.

Funeral Services Conducted From Penn Center Church Today

Chester L. Jones, respected farmer of the Penn Center neighborhood for the past thirty years, passed away at his home there Monday evening following many months of illness. Funeral services were conducted from the Penn Center church this afternoon, Wednesday, June 13, with Rev. Clarence Eppard of near Hepburn, former minister in the Early Chapel church, in charge of the services. Burial was in the Penn Center cemetery.

Chester Jones was born in Glenmont, Ohio, December 14, 1870, the eldest child of Basil and Sarah Watts Jones. At the age of 12 years, he moved with his family from Ohio to Iowa, settling in the Pitzer neighborhood south of Dexter. Here he lived until the time of his marriage to Miss Cora Neff June 20, 1900, when he moved to the farm adjoining that of his parents. They lived there four years before moving to the farm in the Penn Center neighborhood, where they have made their home ever since. Two children were born to this union, Helen and Byron, who with their mother, are left to mourn his passing. Beside his immediate family, two sisters, Cora Bush of Van Horne and Mrs. Maude Machesney of Des Moines, and four brothers, R. S. Jones of Des Moines, J. B. Jones of Dexter, Levi B. Jones of Stuart, and John W. of Dexter, survive.

Mr. Jones began a Christian life at the age of 21 years when he became a member of the Early Chapel church, in which he retained his membership at the time of his death. He had been an elder in this church the last 25 years.
