E. R. LEINARD OF WINTERSET DIES

Member of Pioneer Family Here Was 82 Years Of Age

Ernest R. Leinard, member of a pioneer Madison county family, died Saturday, Oct. 5, at a Winterset nursing home. He had been in failing health of some time. He was 82 years of age.

Mr. Leinard was a Winterset rural mail carrier for 29 years prior to his retirement in 1989 and was active in the rural Mail Carriers association.

He was born near Winterset on Nov. 16, 1874, a son of M. C. and Mary Smith Leinard. His early life was spent in this community and he graduated from Winterset high school with the class of 1895.

As a young man he engaged in farming in the Beerbower neighborhood. He was married on April 25, 1900, to Rosa A. Husted. They were parents of four children. The wife and mother preceded him in death.

From 1919 to 1938 he carried mail from the Winterset post office on rural routes.

On Oct. 23, 1937, he was married to Frances Devitt. They spent most of their married life at Hollister, Mo., where she preceded him in death. He returned to Winterset in 1948.

Surviving are his children; Mrs. Vesta Reed of Buffalo, Mo., Thomas Leinard of Greenfield, Mrs. Inez Foster of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Della Mae Spurgin of Ankeny; a step-daughter, Amy Tingly of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Irma Pruitt of Tacoma, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grand children and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Anderson home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Allen, Mrs. Tom Cooper and Mrs. George Kondes of Des Moines, Mrs. Nina Hale of West Liberty, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Husted and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Husted of Knoxville, Mr. and Mrs. Will Killum and daughter of Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Husted and Mrs. Gene Husted of Truro, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Spurgin and Gene of Ankeny, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reed, Dale and Phillip Reed of Bufalo, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Chandler and son of Ladora, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Leinard and Donald of Orient, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Brown and family of Murray and Charles Spurgin of Mereden.
