Mrs. S. B. Johnson, a resident of Union Township, passed away Feb. 3, 1947, at the age of 85 years and 5 months, in a fire that destroyed the farm home of her son, Lester, where she had resided for the last two and a half years.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Crawford Township, Sept. 3, 1861, the fifth child of Albert J. and Elizabeth Hoisington, one of the pioneer families of Madison county.

At the age of eight years she moved with her parents to Union Township, where she grew to young womanhood, attending the Guiberson School. In this home she was united in marriage on Oct. 23, 1880 to Samuel Blocher Johnson. They spent their first four years in Nickerson, Kansas, returning to Union Township where they purchased the home farm and reared their family.

In 1920, they moved to Winterset and in 1930 they celebrated their Golden Wedding.

Her husband died on Jan. 23, 1937. Mrs. Johnson continued to live in Winterset until October, 1944 and returned to the farm home of her son.

Mrs. Johnson lived in a Christian home, and in early childhood united with the Methodist Church, of which she was a life-long member. She contributed liberally to the church, and was a regular attendant as long as her health permitted. She was always dependable in time of sickness or need, was a faithful wife, and loving mother and grandmother.

She was frequently consulted in matters of Historical facts of Madison county, and the community in which she lived.

Aged Woman Died in Farm Home Fire

Fire which destroyed her home took the life of Mrs. Victoria Johnson, 85, of near Winterset, Monday evening. The fire occurred at the height of the cold wave of the week end. Mrs. Johnson was alone in the house at the time of the blaze, her son, Lester, who lived with her, having gone to the barn to do chores.

Mr. Johnson said that he had been gone but a short time when he noticed that a portion of the house was ablaze. He immediately entered the house to try to rescue his mother but was unable to find her in the then unburned rooms. He was unable to go into the kitchen as it was filled with flames, and it was there that firemen later found the remains of Mrs. Johnson. The house was completely destroyed.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by six children, including Mr. and Mrs. Byron Johnson and family of Earlham.
