Copied from Obituary Scrapbook - Winterset Public Library - Winterset, Iowa

Samuel Blocher Johnson was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, December 12, 1857 and passed away January 23, 1937 at his home in Winterset, aged 79 years, 1 month and 11 days.

In the fall of 1858 with his parents, and his maternal grandfather's family, he came to Liberty Landing, Missouri where their home was established. At the age of 15 he came to Madison County, Iowa seeking work. With the exception of six years spent in Kansas this has been his home since that time.

On October 23, 1880 he was married to Victoria Hoisington of this county. They reached their 56 wedding anniversary last October 23. To them six children were born, three sons and three daughters, Mary Nichols of Des Moines, Laura Taylor of Medford, Oregon, Mabel Simmons, Wesley, Byron and Lester, these three of Union township and Lester still in the home.

He was the eldest of a family of ten children all of whom survive him except one sister and one half-brother.

He united with the Methodist church in 1876 and has maintained his membership through more than sixty years. When services were held in the country near his home he was the one who was always there and carried much of the responsibility of the church in the community. When he transferred his membership to the church in Winterset his interest did not fall. He gave generously of money and labor to make possible this building in which his funeral service was held. He was anxious that there should be a church not only for his own children, but for this entire community. He was a generous giver to the church and the church interest were much in his thinking and planning. His membership was transferred to this church in 1911 when Rev. A. A. Walburn was pastor.
