Jackson Resident Was Son of Pioneer Parents in Madison County
Charles Henry DeVault, member of a pioneer Madison county family, died last Saturday at the age of 67 years.
Mr. DeVault was born Oct. 8, 1872, in Jackson township, the son of Henry and Mary DeVault. His boyhood was spent on the farm. He attended the public schools and the Winterset high school.
On Jan. 1, 1905, he was married to Carrie H. Crow. They went to housekeeping on a farm that adjoined his parents' place, where they lived until 1921, with the exception of five years spent at Dexter and Chariton. They lived for a while on a farm south of Winterset, but had spent the past two years at Pitzer.
Mr. and Mrs. DeVault were the parents of seven children, one of whom died in infancy, and one, Dale, having died 10 years ago.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Mrs. Ruby Sawhill of Winterset, Orla and Gyle DeVault of Jackson township, and Mrs. Reva Duff and Claire DeVault of Afton. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Effie Drake of Winterset; and 19 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday from Anderson's home for funerals in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. J. R. McNichols, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Roberts cemetery.
