Wednesday, 15 December 2004Sylvia A. Gilliland, 100, of Winterset died Dec. 7, 2004 at Winterset Care Center North.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 11 at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Pastors John Shaull and Mike Carlson officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Sylvia Gilliland was born Dec. 20, 1903, in Ionia, Kan., to Benjamin and Rosa (Bowers) Frampton. On Nov. 20, 1923, she married Otto E. Gilliland in Council Bluffs. She was a homemaker and lifelong partner with her husband in farming. They spent 20 years in Nebraska before moving to New Virginia in 1940. After 1944, they farmed in the St. Charles area. Following their retirement in 1972, they moved to Winterset. Sylvia also was a home health care aide in Madison County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winterset where she had taught prekindergarten classes and summer Bible school. She also had been a member of the Hoosier Prairie Women's Club of Winterset and Eastern Star in St. Charles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, four sisters, and one grandson, Michael Smith.
She is survived by two sons, Marion Gilliland of West Des Moines and Ed Gilliland of Liberty, Mo., four daughters, Audrey Wilder of Mission, Texas, Ana Marie Martin of Mesa, Ariz., Dolores Oglesbee of Avondale, Ariz. and Darlene McKinney of Blue Springs, Mo.; and 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
