Funeral services for Lucile R. Mapes, 82, were held Wed. May 15, at Early Chapel Christian Church, of which she was a member with the Rev. Cheryl Gelner officiating. She died Sun. May 12 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.

Born in Madison County near Earlham September 16, 1908, she was the daughter of David Moise and Cora (Hadley) Applegate. After graduation from Redfield High School, she attended Drake University and taught in area country schools for several years. On May 20, 1936, she married Francis H. Mapes. Together they farmed and raised their family in the Earlham community. She was an active member of the Early Chapel Christian Church, teaching Sunday school for over 50 consecutive years. She was involved in the Farm Bureau at various levels and held local, county and state offices and was a member of the Republican Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, and a brother.

Surviving are her husband, Francis; two sons, Merlin and wife, Karen of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Doyle and wife, Chris of Earlham; a daughter, Nyla Mapes of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Russell Applegate of Earlham; and four grandchildren.

Burial was at Dexter Cemetery.
