BETTY PETERSON, Winterset

Betty Jo "Shorty" Peterson, 76, died of a respiratory ailment Nov. 14, 2002, at Winterset Care Center South.

A graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 18, at McDonald-Chase Cemetery in Douglas Township, Madison County, with the Rev. Bill Branson officiating.

Shorty Peterson was born Feb. 10, 1926, in McAllen, Texas, to Harold Ross and Fara (Engel) Raymond. On May 11, 1944, she married Eugene Lloyd Peterson in McAllen. During World War II she resided in Washington, D. C. working at the Pentagon. In 1946, she moved with her husband to Adair to farm. In 1949, she moved to Madison County and continued farming until 1972. Shorty also had been a telephone operator and a rural letter carrier, retiring after 15 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by a son, Harold Leroy Peterson (wife Sandy) of Des Moines; a daughter, Fara Marie Smith (husband Roy) of Winterset; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
