6 October 1999Dick Mapes, 96, died from complications of a stroke Sept. 29, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Winterset.
Graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 1, at Winterset Cemetery with Dr. Mary Pope officiating. Military honors were performed by V.F.W. Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184.
Dick Mapes was born Sept. 20, 1903, to Fred and Frances (Garrett) Mapes of Ft. Supply, Okla. His marriage to Mildred Florence Stevens took place on Feb. 1, 1947, in Council Bluffs. A World War II Navy veteran, Dick was Winterset chief of police until he retired in 1964. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8142. American Legion Post 184, the First Presbyterian Church in Winterset and the Masonic Lodge (Eastern Star Post 43).
He was preceded in death by his wife and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Mapes of Dallas, Texas; a stepdaughter, Shirley Parkins of Winterset; two stepsons, Charles Greenwood of Des Moines and Richard Greenwood of Iowa City; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset.
