Letha Marie Heichel, 88, of Dexter died Dec. 10, 2003, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Donna Vaughan officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Letha Heichel was born Nov. 22, 1915, in Cass County to Augustus Grover and Mary Mathilda (Cron) Maeder. She grew up in Cass County, attending high school in Corning. After teaching in Cass County for a few years, Letha moved to Madison County, where she also taught. On June 7, 1940, she married Floyd Heichel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a member of Farm Bureau, the Madison County Republican Party (served as county chairperson) and the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher, elder, clerk and treasurer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Edna Casey.

She is survived by a son Brian Heichel of Anoka, Minn.; two daughters, Lila Creswell of Dexter and Gayle Christianson of Charles City; a sister, Opal Hart of Winterset; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Letha Heichel, 88, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 13 at Pitzer United Presbyterian church in Pitzer, Iowa, with Pastor Donna Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in Winterset Cemetery.

Letha was born November 22, 1915 in Victoria township, Cass County, Iowa, to Augustus and Mary Maeder. She grew up in Cass County. Letha went to live with her grandparents in Corning, where she graduated from Corning High School in 1933. After obtaining her Normal Teaching Certificate, Letha went on to teach at rural schools in Cass and Madison counties for seven years. On June 7, 1940, she married Floyd Linn Heichel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Letha was active in the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church. She had been a Sunday School Teacher, Elder and Treasurer. She took part in a lot of charitable work, was active in Farm Bureau and the Republican Party, where she had served as the Madison County Chairperson. Letha enjoyed flowers, gardening, reading and genealogy.

She is survived by her children, Lila (Kenneth) Creswell of Dexter, Gayle Christianson of Charles City, and Brian (Terry) Heichel of Anoka, Mn; grandchildren, Richard (Renee) Kirkland, Karen (Ralph) Oswald, Andy (Dena) Christianson, Renee (Ryan) Horgen, Nathan Christianson and Kelly Heichel; great-grandchildren, Jason Oswald, Anna Kirkland, Samantha Kirkland and Justin Horgen, and a sister, Opal Hart of Winterset. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd and a sister, Edna Casey.

Visitation is Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church, Friends of Winterset Public Library or the Madison County Genealogical Society.
