DONALD THOMAS, Winterset

Donald H. Thomas, 83, of Winterset died July 8, 2005, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobb Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Don Thomas was born Sept. 19, 1921, to Harry M. and Alice M. (McKeever) Thomas of Macksburg. He was a graduate of Macksburg High School and Central College and received his master's degree from Drake University. On Aug. 8, 1947, he married M. Jean Dingeman at Central College in Pella. Don, a lifetime Madison County resident, had been an art teacher in the Winterset Community School District from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. Active in the community, he was a founder and past chairperson for the Winterset Art Center and helped form and serve on the George Washington Carver Memorial Corporation, which raised money and developed the Carver Park. He also designed the large stone Winterset sign located on the north edge of town.

Don was a member of American Legion Post 184, V.F.W. Post 8142, American Defenders of Bataan and Corrigidor, Friends of the Winterset Public Library, Winterset Alumni Association and the Winterset First United Methodist Church. A Marine Corps veteran, he was a P.O.W. for three and one-half years during World War II.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Claire, Lawrence and Raymond Thomas; and two sisters, Arlene Nixon and Lois Foster.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Winterset; one daughter, DeLynn Thomas of Waterloo; one son, Craig Thomas of Ames; two sister, Doris Blank of Anaheim, Calif., and Shirlee Harris of Yulee, Fla.; and three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
