Bert J. Hollen, prominent farmer of the Webster community, died at his home across the line in Adair county Monday, May 1, 1944. His death came suddenly, due to a heart attack. He had been fixing fence on his farm and was stricken upon completing the task. He was 63 years of age.
Mr. Hollen was a native of Norway, where he was born June 13, 1880, the son of John J. and Kristina Hollen. When he was a year old, he was brought to this country by his parents. They settled on the farm in Adair county, where most of his life was spent and his death occurred.
He attended high school in Winterset and State Teachers' college at Cedar Falls. After teaching school for a short time in Adair and Hamilton counties, he returned to the home farm where most of his life was spent. From 1926 to 1928 he lived in Indianola, and from 1928 to 1933 he served as a bookkeeper at the Madison County State Bank in Winterset.
He was married to Emma L. Hart, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Lucille Koch of Carroll; two sons, Ensign John Hollen of the U.S. Navy and Eugene Hollen of Davenport; two brothers, O. H. Hollen and N. E. Hollen, both of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Mary Carlisle of Princeton, Mo.; a half-sister, Mrs. Erma Underwood of Ithaca, N.Y.; and his step-mother, Mrs. J. J. Hollen of Ithaca, N.Y.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, May 4th at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. W. A. Samp. He will be assissted by the Rev. A. R. Weed. Burial will be made in the Winterset Cemetery.
