Former Madison Couny Social Sevices director Arling E. Smith died Thursday, Jan. 29 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was 72 years old.
Mr. Smith was Social Services director in Madison County for 34 years, retiring in 1979.
Born in Linn County, he was the son of Ralph Smith and Lillie Phillipson. He was married to Mabelle Price on June 8, 1941 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been Winterset residents since 1942.
Mr. Smith was active in many community and state organizations.
He was a past president and long-time member of the Lions Club, also serving as cabinet secretary and secretary twice. He was also a Mason.
Mr. Smith was chairman of the county Board of Health for 12 years, a Madison County representative on the Mental Health Board at Clarinda, and was a past president of the County Welfare Directors.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his mother and father, four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Mabelle, and two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Ruskell of Jackson, Minn. and Hazel Smith of Cedar Rapids.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 2 at the First United Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Smith was an Elder and Clerk of Session for many years. Rev. Alan Parker officiated.
Burial was at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
