John Edward 'Jed' Gorman, of 705 West Filmore Street, Winterset, died Sat. Feb. 12, 1994, of pneumonia at Madison County Memorial Hospital. He was 68. A memorial service will be today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Winterset First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Bauer officiating. Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Gorman was born October 18, 1925 in Winterset to Marion Smith and John Clifford Gorman. Upon graduation from Winterset High School, Mr. Gorman enlisted in the military and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946 in the Asian Pacific.

Mr. Gorman married Ruth Jessie Fletcher in Winterset in 1947, and from this union came four children.

Mr. Gorman graduated from the University of Iowa Journalism College in 1949 and then worked for a time as a photographer-new reporter for the Independence, Iowa Bulletin-Journal.

In the Spring of 1951, the couple returned to Winterset where Mr. Gorman became the third generation of his family to be associated with the Madisonian. John purchased the newspaper in 1965, serving as editor-publisher until his retirement in 1989, when he sold the newspaper to his son, Ted.

Mr. Gorman served two terms on the Winterset School Board, was an elder and lifelong member of the Winterset First United Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion and the V.F.W., and served on numerous committees and organizations in Madison County.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, J. C. Moore, and is survived by his wife and four children, Patricia Gorman, Jefferson; Ted Gorman, Winterset; Jane Wooldridge, Omaha, Neb.; and Carol Gorman of Winterset, and two grandchildren.

The cremains will be interred at a later date at the Winterset Cemetery in a military graveside service.
