Joshua Gentry, one of the oldest settlers of Madison county, died at the home of his son, Wesley, in this city last Saturday at the age of 88 years. Mr. Gentry came to Madison county in the early 50’s. He has continuously lived here ever since. He was one of Madison county’s best and most prosperous farmers, a man of the strictest integrity—universally respected and trusted. The funeral services were held Tuesday and the remains were interred in the Hooten cemetery in Lincoln township.

Joshua Gentry was born in Kentucky, Feb. 25, 1824 and died Nov. 15, 1913, at his home in Winterset.

He was married to Elizabeth Foley of Indiana in 1844. His wife died in 1881 and in 1883, he was again married to Rebecca Devault.

He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, having united with it in 1843.

He came to Iowa in 1850 and at the time of his death was one of the oldest settlers of the county. He was an industrious and upright citizen and was highly respected in the neighborhood, where he had lived so long. His home for many years was in the neighborhood of the Hooten school house, until he removed to Winterset a few years ago.

There were seven children, of whom four are living: David and Wesley are well known in Winterset and throughout the county, John, lives at Milton, Ore.; Mrs. Daisy Hogue resides in Kansas.

The burial was at the Hooten cemetery, the exercises occurring last Tuesday; Elder Young of Indianola, officiating.
