Mrs. J. S. Butt of Peru Died Sunday

Death Occurs at Hospital In Winterset at Age of 74 Years

Mrs. J. S. Butt of Peru died Sunday, May 4, at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset, after years of failing health. She was 74 years of age.

Mrs. Butt was the former Mabel Goldie Baker, daughter of Thomas and Clara Flick Baker. She was born near Diagonal on Jan. 18, 1884.

She graduated from high school at Knowlton, and taught school for several years in Ringgold county. She was a member of the Baptist church at Knowlton, later transferring to the Methodist church at Peru.

She was married March 16, 1903, to James S. Butt. They were parents of seven daughters and two sons, with three of the daughters, Hazel, Gladys and Alta, and one son, Floyd, preceding her in death.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Arthur Butt of Sunnyvale, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. Clara Moore, of Newberg, Ore., Mrs. Anna Travis of Peru, Mrs. Lena Howard of Winterset, and Mrs. Edna Andrews of Portland, Ore., 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She also leaves three brothers, James Baker of Iola, Kan., Willard Baker of Diagonal, and Harold Baker of Newburg, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. Fleta Duncan of Mitchell, S. Dak., and Mrs. Flossie Townsend of Clearfield.
