J. J. Spurgin, one of the well known men of the county, died at his home just west of the city Monday morning (Jan. 4th) at ten o'clock, after an illness of a couple of weeks. Mr. Spurgin had been troubled with a weak heart, and that combined with other troubles caused his death. He was for many years one of the prominent business men of Winterset, being engaged in the butcher business. He leaves a wife, two sons and a daughter to mourn him. The funeral occurred Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in the Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Atwood.

John Spurgin, one of the older residents of this community and a man highly respected by the people of his acquaintance, died at his home west of town on Monday of this week. While he had been in failing health for some time, the public were not familiar with the facts and the announcement of his death after a week’s illness from a complication of stomach and heart trouble, was a shock to his friends and former business associates.
