Death of Mrs. W. H. Paullin

Mrs. William H. Paullin, a pioneer resident of Madison county, died at her home here last Thursday after an illness of three weeks. She was 80 years old. Last June, she and her husband had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Paullin was born Esther Cline in Louisa county, Iowa, on February 25, 1854. As a child she came with her parents to this county and settled in Douglas township. On June 10, 1874, she was married to W. H. Paullin, and they were the parents of eight children, five of whom survive.

Mrs. Paullin was a member of the First M. E. church of Winterset for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the W.C.T.U. from which she was awarded a certificate of "Life Patron" and was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps.

The deceased is survived by her husband, two daughters, Luella Orr and Mrs. Minnie McDonald, of Winterset, and three sons, Elmer Paullin, of Des Moines, B. A. Paullin, of Peru, and Edward H. Paullin, of Winterset. There are also 20 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the First M. E. church in Winterset on August 12, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. L. H. Lanning was in charge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. William H. Paullin

Esther Cline was born in Louisa county, Iowa, February 25, 1854. She came to Madison county with her parents, when a child, and settled in Douglas township. Her death marks the passing of a pioneer and life-long resident of this county.

On June 10, 1874, she was united in marriage with William H. Paullin. To this union eight children were born. Two of them died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Clark, died at the age of forty-five. Mr. and Mrs. Paullin celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on June 10th last.

Mrs. Paullin was a member of the Winterset Methodist Episcopal church for over thirty years and was ever devoted to the services of the church and the spread of the gospel. She was a member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and was an ardent worker in the cause of temperance, having a certificate of Life Patron in the Union, bearing the date of 1927. She was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corp of Winterset.

In her death she leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, William Paullin, and five children, Luella Orr, of Winterset; Elmer Paullin, of Des Moines; Edward H. Paullin and Mrs. Minnie McDonald, of Winterset; and B. A. Paullin, of Peru. There are twenty grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Paullin was taken sick about three weeks ago, and though she did not suffer pain, through the days of extreme heat she constantly grew weaker. On Thursday night, August 9, 1934, she succumbed to death, passing quietly and peaceably from the flesh. Her husband and children were with her. She was aged 80 years, 5 months and 14 days.

Funeral service was held at the First Methodist Episcopal church at Winterset on Sunday afternoon, August 12, at 1:30 o’clock, the pastor, Dr. L. H. Lanning, have charge of the service. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.

The pallbearers were L. E. Paullin, E. H. Paullin, R. A. Paullin, A. R. Clark, M. J. Orr and Merton E. Cline.

Those coming from a distance to attend the funeral services of Mrs. W. H. Paullin were, Dave Paullin, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Osborne and family, from Stuart; Mr. and Mrs. Ward Paullin and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Dalton, of Dexter; Mr. and Mrs. John Caves, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Colman and Mrs. Mildred Simpson, of Redfield; Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Paullin, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Paullin and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Paullin, of Booneville; Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Paullin, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Soule and Mrs. Emmanuel Bilz and daughter, Rosalind, of Des Moines; Robert Orr, of Ames, and Dale Orr, from Indianola.
