Samuel D. Lathrum, 80, of Winterset, died of leukemia July 17, 1995 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services will be July 20 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Don Frank will officiate the services and burial will be at the Union Chapel Cemetery in Madison County. Visitation will be Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home.

He was born March 25, 1915 in Madison County to David Andrew and Anna Elizabeth (Freeborn) Lathrum. He married Vivian B. Gamble on Oct. 4, 1934 in Creston and later married Marjorie Emerson on June 22, 1974 in Winterset. He was a farmer and a lifetime resident of Madison County. He had attended the St. Charles schools and graduated with the class of 1934 as president of the senior class. He was a member of the FFA and 4-H, having served as 4H committeeman and a 4-H leader in Union Township. He had served on the Madison County Fair Board for 13 years and was superintendent of the swine department for nine years. He had served on the Madison County Pork Producers Board for 20 years, 13 years as chairman. He pioneered the pie baking contest and the food booths. He had also served nine years on the Madison County ASCS committee, serving as chairman for seven of those years. He had been a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau for 48 years. He was also a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, having served on various boards and committees and serving as chairman of the finance committee for one year.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one son, one brother, and one grandson.

Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, Ed Lathrum and wife Sherry and Gary Lathrum, all of Winterset; one step-son, Scott Emerson and wife Barbara of Littleton, Colo.; two step-daughters, Bonnie Gordon of Lakewood, Colo. and Ann Armit of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Leah Woodford and husband Don of Sergeant Bluff and Dorothy Smith of Booneville; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
