Frederick P. Hartsook, prominent Winterset business man for half a century, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1953, at Madison County Memorial Hospital here, following a short illness. He was 79 years of age.
Mr. Hartsook was a life-long resident of this community. He was born in Lincoln township on Jan. 18, 1874, a son of William and Catherine Smoot Hartsook. He was fifth in a family of nine children.
He attended the Grant school in Lincoln township, and was graduated from the Iowa Business college in Des Moines. In 1893, shortly after completing his schooling, he entered the employ of W. H. Jones, Winterset implement dealer, as a bookkeeper.
In 1909, he became a partner in the business, which by that time was owned by W. H. Doak. The firm of Doak and Hartsook continued until 1918, when Mr. Doak retired. After that, the business was operated by Mr. Hartsook until his retirement in 1943 after 50 years of service there.
Mr. Hartsook was married June 12, 1900, to Miss Vina Foresman of Winterset. They were parents of one daughter, Helen, now Mrs. Karl R. Tuttle of Spencer.
He had been a member of the First Presbyterian church in Winterset since 1900. He was ordained an elder in 1911, and served in that capacity until his death. He was active in the work of his church over a long period of years.
Mr. Hartsook was one of the founders of the Winterset Rotary club, and was active in the Knights of Pythias lodge here for more than half a century.
Surviving are his wife; the daughter, two grandsons, Frederick M. Tuttle and Robert F. Tuttle, both of Spencer; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Newell of Howard, Kan., and a brother, Ben B. Hartsook of Lincoln township.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the First Presbyterian Church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. George De F. Fisher. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.
_________________________Coordinator's note: Middle name taken from his Iowa Death Certificate. The statement that he was buried at Winterset appears to be false as his gravestone is in the Riverside Cemetery at Spencer, Iowa.
