Geo. Johnson died at his home on north First street Saturday evening, after an illness of one week from paralysis, at the age of seventy-five years. The deceased was born in Wayne county, Ohio, in 1840, served in the War of the Rebellion, company A of the 169th Ohio regiment.

He came to Iowa at the close of the war in 1865, locating in Marion county, and in 1874 moved to the West Star neighborhood in Douglas township, this county.

He was married to Miss Mary Smith, a native of Ohio, in 1871, who with two daughters survive him. The daughters are Mrs. Perry Hersom of Columbus, Mont., and Mrs. Frank Newlon of Melcher, Iowa.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon and burial in the Winterset cemetery.

Obituary

George Johnson was born near Wooster, Wayne county, Ohio, November 13, 1840, and died in his home May 15, 1915, aged 74 years, 6 months and 2 days.

In the spring of 1864 he enlisted in the U. S. Army at Wooster, Ohio in Company A, 169 regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served 9 months.

After his discharge he spent 3 months in Michigan and then came to Pleasantville, Marion county, Iowa in 1864 where he lived 4 years. He then went to Carlisle, Iowa where he lived 2 years and was married to Miss Mary Smith, of Carlisle, March 4, 1871. To this happy home three children were born. Thomas died in infancy, Mrs. Mary A. Hersom, of Columbus, Montana, whom he visited with his wife last fall, and Mrs. Martha A. Newlon, of Melcher, Iowa.

Mr. Johnson and family came to Madison county in 1874 and settled in Douglas township where he lived until he and his wife came to Winterset about five years ago.

He is survived by one brother, of Pleasantville, Iowa, who was here in his last sickness, death and burial, his four sisters and four grandchildren, two of Mrs. Hersom and two of Mrs. Newlon.

Mr. Johnson was converted in the West Star N. E. church in January 1878 during the pastorate of Rev. Thornbrue. He has lived a true, quiet and devoted Christian life ever since and lived it every day. He was greatly beloved by his wife, daughters, neighbors and friends, and he equally loved them. He had a smile and good word for everybody. He was cheery and hopeful and happily contented. All who knew him will feel that in his going they have parted with a “good man”, loyal citizen and patriot and Christian brother.
