Funeral services for Mrs. J. C. (Marion) Moore, former co-publisher of the Winterset Madisonian, were held this Wednesday, July 7, 1982, at 10:30 a.m. from the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset.
Mrs. Moore died Sunday afternoon, July 4, at Care Center North in Wintersest. She was 83 years of age.
The eldest daughter of Edward McMurray and Evalyn Crossley Smith, she was born in Winterset on March 6, 1899. She graduated from Winterset high school in 1917, and from the University of Iowa in 1921.
At the University,she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Mortar Board honorary women's sorority, Mortar Board honorary women's organization, Theta Sigma Phi journalism sorority, served as an editor of the Daily Iowan student newspaper, and edited the Hawkeye college yearbook.
In September of 1921 she went to Emmetsburg, Iowa and taught in the high school for two years. In 1923 she married John C. Gorman of nearby Ruthven. In 1925 they moved to Winterset, where she began working at the Madisonian.
Mr. Gorman died Nov. 13, 1932. She was married to J. C. Moore of Corydon, Iowa on Sept. 24, 1937. They purchased a half interest in the Madisonian from her father soon after, and assumed operation and management of the newspaper.
This continued until 1965, when they sold the newspaper to their son, John Gorman, marking three generations of consecutive family ownership. Mr. Moore died Jan. 2, 1978.
Mrs. Moore was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset, Progressive Study Club, and L. O. Club.
In addition to her two husbands, Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Graening and Dorothy Smith.
Surviving are her son, John E. Gorman of Winterset; four grandchildren, Patricia Gorman of Jefferson Iowa; Ted Gorman of Urbandale, Iowa; Mrs. Jane Wooldridge of Little Falls, New Jersey; and Carol Gorman of Iowa City, Iowa; and a sister, Mrs. W. L. (Frances) Fry of San Diego, Ca.
Officiating at the funeral service Wednesday morning was the Rev. Alan Parker of the First United Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
