LUCRETIA NEWTON, Winterset

Lucretia "Cre" Naydene Newton, 71, of Winterset died Jan. 29, 2003, of complications of a stroke at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 1, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with Donna Vaughan officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lowell Leon.

Cre Newton was born July 20, 1931, in Winterset to Halden and Vivian (Addy) Storrs. She was a graduate of Winterset High School. She married John E. Drake. They had three sons. She later married Phil Newton. A lifelong area resident, Cre had worked as a receptionist/secretary for Winterset Medical Associataes for many years. She later worked for Madison County Alcohol and Drug Services in Winterset. She was a member of Eastern Star, First United Methodist Church, and the Sunshine Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lowell Leon.

She is survived by her husband, Phil, of Winterset; three sons, John P. Drake of Oklahoma City, Okla., James L. Drake of Carson and Jerry W. Drake of Winterset; three stepdaughters, Carol Crall and Kathy Osborn, both of Ankeny, and Phyllis Vore of Ames, a stepson, Greg Newton of Norwalk; 11 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
