John Worthington Leinard was born Oct. 10, 1846 in Harrison county, Ohio and died April 8, 1917 at his late home in Lincoln township, Madison county, Iowa, aged 70 years, 5 months and 28 days.
The fist six years of his life were spent in the place of his birth, and in the autumn of 1852 his father, the late Jacob Leinard, removed to Winterset by wagon and team, crossing the Mississippi river on October 10th, this being the sixth anniversary of the birth of the subject of this sketch. The next 20 years of his life were spent on his father's farm in Lincoln township, this county, where he worked on the farm, attending school in the winters, and afterward teaching for a short time. At the age of 24 years, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Ann Smith, who survives him. To this union were born four children: Benton Hubert, who died in 1904; Mrs. Althen Jones of Sterling, Colo.; Arthur H., of this city and Mildred. Other members of the family are: Mrs. Leora Leinard, widow of Benton Hubert, daughter, Marjorie and six other grand children.
About 20 years of Mr. Leinard's life subsequent to his marriage were spent on a farm in Adair county, two years on a farm near Murray. The more recent years have been spent on his father's farm in Lincoln township, which was a part of the Leinard family estate for more than 60 years, later purchased by John W. Leinard.
His death was caused by Bright's disease with other complications, which seized him on Saturday night, March 31st and though medical help was promptly sought and vigorously maintained there seemed little hope from the beginning. May we all try to meet him in that land of “Unclouded Day”.
The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at two o'clock Tuesday, April 10th, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. M. Cable, assisted by E. R. Zeller, and the remains were laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery.
